Answer
1. What is the weight of the product I’m lifting. Also keep in mind that North American Forklift’s capacity is rated at a 24” Load Centre. If my load is 5,000lbs and it’s dimensions are 42” wide x 48” long, then I will require a 5,000lb forklift. If my load is double the length (96”), then I will need to double the capacity of the forklift. ie: 10,000lbs. approx.
2. Should I be buying an electric or propane forklift. Electric forklifts initially cost more, but don’t require as much maintenance. (providing you’re buying from a reputable supplier) Propane trucks generally have a bit more pushing / pulling power. If I only have limited square footage and the truck will be required to work inside, am I exposing my workers to Carbon Monoxide poisoning? (call and ask for specific details on allowable sq. ft.)
3. How high do I have to lift, and keep in mind that the forklifts capacity will de-rate as the mast goes up. Also the skid will always hang about 3-5” below the fork.
4. Will this truck be required to work in an aisle and if so, what is the width of that aisle?
5. Will this forklift have to load and unload trailers?
6. Will I have to double stack or un-double stack inside a trailer, if so, you will need a Full Free Lift Mast. (most all three stage trucks have Full Free Lift and very few two stage trucks)
7. If I’m doing a lot of loading and unloading in a trailer, a side shifter may be of great assistance and a timesaver. (a side shifter will reduce the truck’s capacity by 10%, unless it is integral)
8. Will this truck be required to work outside and if so, what are the ground conditions, you may require a pneumatic forklift. (simply means larger tires)
9. Am I buying this truck from a reputable supplier that has my safety in mind?
10. Will I be buying this truck Certified and with a warranty?
11. Does my supplier of choice have the parts and service personnel to fulfill my needs?
12. Does my supplier of choice have the parts and service personnel to fulfill my needs?
13. Are their technicians factory trained and are certified by the Ministry?
14. If I’m not happy with the forklifts capabilities / quality, will my supplier of choice take it back?
15. If I require a special attachment, does my supplier of choice have the knowledge and stock to support my current and or any future unexpected needs?
